Keystone Species: Lemmings
They not only eat all 5 producers listed (including dyra, which are eaten by no other listed consumer), they are prey for four different species. To remove them from the ecosystem would have a devastating effect on the environment.
Indicator Species: Willows, Sedges and Grasses
The majority of plants in the tundra grow low to the ground, including willows and sedges and grasses. However, in warmer climates, willows, sedges and grasses don’t grow low to the ground. These species are indicator species because, if they are in their dwarf form, that means the biome they are located in is tundra.
Species Richness:
The tundra, despite the harsh climate, maintains a solid number of different species. However, compared to other biomes, this number is drastically low. The low amount of precipitation, freezing temperatures, short summers and short days decrease the number of species that are able to live there. Although, these harsh conditions increase the fitness of the species living there, so the tundra is unlikely to suffer too greatly from a lack of species richness.
